I often get asked for location suggestions for engagement sessions. While it’s not the most important part of your engagement session, it can have a big impact on how your images turn out. Choosing the right location for you as a couple may require some thought, but it will be worth it to get photographs you love.
Pick a meaningful location
When choosing a location for your engagement photos, think about how you like to spend your time. Are you the adventurous type that loves exploring new places? Choose one of your favorite spots in town or go hiking for an adventure engagement session! Maybe you like to visit local cafes or coffee shops? Order a cappuccino and get some relaxed lifestyle type photos of the two of you. Perhaps you’re more of a homebody; you can even opt for a cozy lifestyle session in your home. Maybe you met in college and you want to incorporate your alma mater into your session. Think about the places that matter most to you and how they can help you tell your love story.
Head to your favorite date spot
Do you have a favorite local cafe or bar? Maybe there’s a museum or park you like to visit. Locations that you enjoy together can be the perfect spot for your engagement session. Since you’ll already feel comfortable in a familiar place, you can focus on each other and worry less about being in front of the camera.
Keep the time of day in mind
When it comes to photography, the time of day can make all the difference with the lighting. If you have a sunset or nighttime shoot in mind, talk to me about the best places to capture that specific type of lighting.
Consider your outfit choice
If you’re not sure where to have your engagement session but you know what outfit you’re going to wear, then let your clothes guide you. For example, you likely wouldn’t wear a formal dress to the beach or a flowing gown in an urban environment. Consider where your clothes would fit in best, and if you’re unsure, I’m happy to offer suggestions.
Plan for the season
If you love fall foliage or spring cherry blossom photos, do some research and find out when the peak time for those colors are. Make sure to plan your outfits according to the season, and don’t be afraid to bundle up if it is chilly. Cozy photos can be very cute!
