Engaged couples often ask me for suggestions of what they should wear to their engagement sessions. Considering that engagement pictures are often used for save-the-dates, wedding websites, and even wedding décor, it’s an important question. Here are a few tips for choosing what to wear for your engagement photos.
Choose outfits that express your personality.
It’s important that you wear clothes that make you feel like you, and that allow you to express your unique style and personality. Your engagement session should be a fun experience, and you want your outfits to reflect your personalities!
Choose neutrals and pastels.
Light colors such as pastels, cool tones, or neutrals, paired with a pop of color from your shoes or accessories is always a classic look. Some bright colors can be distracting, and you don’t want your outfit to be the focus of the photos.
Coordinate outfits to avoid matching or clashing.
You don’t want to wear the same color, but you also don’t want to wear colors that don’t go together or feature busy patterns. Choose complementary colors and solid prints. You can even wear different shades of the same color such as navy and light blue for a subtle matching effect.
Accessorize.
Choosing an accessory, such as a hat or statement jewelry, adds texture and interest to your photos. You could also consider dressing in layers to create more variety in your outfits.
Pick classic looks.
Go for outfits that feature a timeless look, rather than trendy styles so your images don’t feel dated a few years later.
Limit your outfit changes to two looks.
Your engagement session isn’t a fashion photoshoot, and you don’t want to be rushing to change outfits. You should choose no more than two outfits that depict your unique style and personalities. Layers that you can put on or take off can also give you a different look within minutes. You can even add a secondary fun outfit change, such as your favorite sports team jerseys!
